Overview

Freetrade is a UK investing app for people building a long-term portfolio rather than day trading. Its big selling point is that every plan, including the free one, comes with a Stocks and Shares ISA, a SIPP, a Junior ISA and a general investment account, with no commission on trades. Freetrade Limited is authorised and regulated by the FCA, and the company is now part of IG Group, which is listed in the FTSE 100.

Accounts and costs

You pick a plan rather than an account type. Basic is £0 a month and charges a 0.99% FX fee whenever you buy or sell something not priced in pounds. Standard costs £4.99 a month (or £59.88 a year) and cuts the FX fee to 0.59%, and Plus is £9.99 a month (or £119.88 a year) with a 0.39% FX fee, free same-day withdrawals and priority support. All plans pay some interest on uninvested cash, rising with the plan. You can start with as little as £1. There's no leverage or short selling.

Platforms and markets

Everything runs through Freetrade's own app and web platform; there's no MetaTrader or TradingView. You get more than 8,600 investments: UK, US and European shares, ETFs, mutual funds, investment trusts, REITs, gilts, UK Treasury bills, plus some crypto ETNs. US shares can be bought in fractions, and you can set limit orders, stop losses and recurring orders.

Money in and out

Deposits go in by bank transfer, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, with no deposit fee. Standard withdrawals to your bank are free and usually take a couple of days. Same-day withdrawals cost £5 unless you're on Plus. Eligible cash and investments are covered by the FSCS up to £85,000, and client assets are held in ring-fenced accounts.

What traders say

Scores from the sites traders use, and our summary of what they're saying, checked 6 October 2026.

Freetrade is well liked by most of the UK investors who review it. It holds 4.3 on Trustpilot from about 7,500 reviews (the decimal as reported by Money to the Masses in July 2026). Reddit users in r/FreetradeApp noted a wave of negative Trustpilot reviews after the sale to IG Group in early 2025, though the score has stayed in the low 4s. Most complaints are about fees on foreign trades and occasional withdrawal hold-ups.

What traders like

  • Simple app. Many reviewers on Trustpilot and Reddit describe the app as clean and easy to use, especially for beginners.

  • Low cost for UK investing. Commission-free trades, fractional US shares and a cheap ISA and SIPP get frequent praise, and some say they would pay far more at a traditional platform.

  • Withdrawals that work. Several Reddit users say they have withdrawn without trouble over years of use.

  • Pension and transfer features. Some recent Trustpilot reviewers mention moving a workplace pension in and using the treasury feature for cash.

Common complaints

  • FX fees. A common complaint on Reddit and Trustpilot is the currency conversion charge on US shares, up to 0.99% on the free plan, which some compare unfavourably with Trading 212.

  • Withdrawal delays. A minority of Trustpilot and Reddit reviewers say withdrawals were stuck for a week or more with repeated holding replies from support.

  • Paywalled features. Some say parts of the stock range and order types sit behind paid plans, and that the range is smaller than at Trading 212 or Hargreaves Lansdown.

  • Live pricing. A few reviewers raise problems with prices shown in the app.

Recently

  • September 2026: Trustpilot reviews include complaints about ISA cash that could not be withdrawn for over a week, and Freetrade replied on 3 September to a review about pricing. Positive reviews in the same period mention pension transfers.
